TO MANGA READERS: PLEASE BOYCOTT ALL KAYONO'S WORKS

by - Sunday, March 13, 2011

I am currently reading Royal Seventeen Manga by Kayono and stumbled upon one of the forum topics. It seems that there has been a court battle between Kayono and Takashima Kazusa (2009?).

WILDROCK Manga (Genre: Yaoi)

Takashima sued Kayono because she (Kayono) plagiarized some of her works (Wildrock,. idk the others) and molded into her work Shinobi No Onna. But Takashima lost the battle because Kayono have a very famous mangaka mother, IDE Chikae and some connections. Also, the jury was bias because Takashima wrote boy love (yaoi). Takashima cannot publish any manga anymore because Kayono's mother Ide Chikae practically slammed the whole boy-love industry and said something along the lines of"Kayono cannot copy what she has not seen" (because somehow, her daughter can draw smut but doesn't read boy love). Along with that, there is a blacklist in the art industry for people who plagiarize. Yes, Kayono did plagiarize but she won her case, so the loser of the case Takashima, is blacklisted from many magazines. So even if she did draw, no one would accept her drawings. Having a mangaka who lost a plagiarizing case makes the magazine look bad. Takashima is unable to publish because Kayono used her connections with Ide Chikae as her mother and basically plagiarized Takashima's work and then winning her case, forced Takashima out of a livelihood since now Takashima cannot publish manga.

This is the proof:

To know more about this:

I am not a fan of Yaoi but I feel for Takashima. I also don't want my works & ideas being copied by other people. So if you have read this, please DON'T READ OR BUY any of Kayono's work. Thank you.

  2. At first when I heard about the case, naturally I wanted to side with Kayono, because I've read and loved all her mangas. However, when I read into the case, I couldn't help but notice uncomfortable similarities between Kayono's and Takashima-sensei's work. I would be an ignorant to conclude that its not plagiarism, and frankly I cannot believe the Japanese court ruled that its not!
Kayono's parent might helped her to get away with it, but now I have respect for Takashima-sensei, it's heartbreaking that she's the victim and she's still suffering.

  3. For me it's still Kayono's work.
All manga authors are inspired (voluntarly or not) by some other novels, photos, images they saw and they don't speak about it. And often it's more than 2 or 3 sequences like here, it's the whole manga which is copied.

For me in this case it's not plagiarism, it's not the same story, and the art are quite differents.

  4. Plagiarism is plagiarism. While many artists are influenced by other works, it does not mean that these artists should downright copy styles and story lines.

While I enjoy both of the mangaka's stories, I have to side with Takeshima simply because all of the evidence shows that there was an infringement on Takeshima's intellectual property rights.

  5. @ikki: Thanks for the info. :D

@dashu: Yes it's true that some of the stories are inspired by other authors. But still, in this case, the pictures look kinda alike. The same actions, monsters and expressions. Like, wth is that? It's like it's been cut from the page and pasted.

  6. I'm Gonna have to agree with Dashu. however i love both of their works. I think that it is entirely possible to produce work that appears similar to another persons work without having know about it. I think what is really important is that the entire story isnt copied. I think bringing up the ad was pointless tho. ads are copied all the time. tmobile is currently copying apple commercials/ads. That position that man is sitting in in that ad are common sorta in ads, its sexually and it says the sex symbol on the kayono page so i think that is more a representation of a common sex symbol than anything else.
Im confused about how the last bit about Takashima works.

  7. Well, what can you say about this?
I just had that same experience. Someone copied my personal desc., but omitted the last parts, and added her own.
See this, I posted it here: http://edjellen.blogspot.com/2011/05/copycat.html
I think this is the same as what Kayono did.

  8. @Edfa: uhmmmm. i just opened the picture you posted. i have a question. is the person who stole your personal desc. a stranger to you? otherwise, how could you be chatting with someone she's married to??
also, it says to visit at edjellen.blogspot.com , which is YOUR wesbite, riiight?

  9. @czartchiee: Thanks for the reply :) But you got it wrong. The one who is copying my description is the picture above with the name 'Myleen.' And the one who you say is married to someone is me, with my blog listed below the desc. Well, you can always do that in FB. ;;)

  10. honestly I really don't think it should be such an issue that it should have been brought to the courts attention. I think both are great artist, and if anything for someone to copy, plagiarize whatever you wanna call it I would take it as a compliment. Kayono took what she liked and put her own edge on it, it's flattering if anything.

  11. All manga has the same story lines. I don't think it's plagiarizing because all manga is usually so predictable It's like saying Spiderman copied Superman. They both have the same story line because that's what people want to read.

  12. It is plagiarizing, if...
    ... there are obvious similarities
-> in this case: take a look at different scrabbles/ paigesequences and you will see, that the scrabble with only the eye of the Prince in it, is quite the same. Even the order in wich they are placed.

So even if Kayono-sensei didn´t copy on purpose,( wich, in my opinion, she did) she commited a crime. Because somthing is done unconcouse, it has not to be legal!

  13. Personally I'm a big Kayono fan. I prefer her stories and her style. But I've looked at the pictures though and while they are very similar, I can't say they are uncommon scenes. To me, they are not more alike than scenes I'd bet I could find in at least 10 other manga. Not to mention, the stories are both original to each artist. I think it's an unfortunate result that Takashima can't draw for a living but it sounds like a consequence of going after another artist.

  15. While I do agree that it is quite common, and even okay for an author to reference other images for his or her work, He or she must CITE THE REFERENCE. It is common knowledge that any references or inspirations must be credited.
Allowing her to get off scot-free and even punishing the other author for this teaches people that it is ok to copy other people's ideas, and expect no consequences. I find it simply unacceptable that she can simply shirk her responsibility to others (in crediting their ideas). Your liking this mangaka does not make it okay.

  16. All manga pretty much merges into one when it comes to love stories. There are very few manga that you can call individual.
